Cat Psychology and Cat Behaviour Services

What is Cat Behaviour and Cat Psychology?

Just like people, we have counsellors and psychologists. Human counselling is typically concerned with immediate and practical issues, such as processing grief or anger. Psychotherapy, on the other hand, is the long-term treatment of mental illness and helps clients conduct an extensive examination of their psychological history.

Cat Psychology is no different. As a Cat Psychologist, Jules recognises *why* a cat is behaving in a certain way, which allows for a much deeper understanding of the cat’s brain, genetics, and innate behaviours. This broader qualification enables a Cat Psychologist to formulate a substantial behaviour modification plan, including cat training, that supports a stronger long-term prognosis for changing undesirable behaviour.

About Jules dos Santos – the Cat Whisperer

Jules has always had a deep love and passion for both big and small cats. Her keen interest in feline welfare and behaviour inspires her drive to explore the cat’s brain and psychological characteristics. She began her career as a Veterinary Nurse and founded Divine Creatures with one goal – to ensure the welfare of every cat in her care, particularly by honouring their innate behaviours.

Jules obtained her Level 4 Diploma in Cat Psychology with distinction, leading to the successful rehabilitation of numerous behavioural issues and the restoration of cat-owner relationships. Nearly 75% of cats surrendered to pounds are given up due to undesirable behaviours. With over 150,000 cats euthanised in Australia each year, it is devastating to consider that for the small cost of employing a Cat Psychologist, these numbers could be significantly reduced – or even eliminated.

Cat behaviour problems can have a profound impact on the family. Jules assists in modifying these behaviours and helps owners cultivate fulfilling, loving relationships with their cats. This often involves helping owners truly understand the pet they’ve chosen to share their lives with. Her outstanding expertise has been recognised by Dr Harry Cooper, The Cat Protection Society, The Today Show, Sunrise, and Nine News.

Jules is the former Director of Boarding and Pet Care Services for the Pet Industry Association of Australia and sat on the Committee for the AFAM Industry Training Advisory Body.

Cat Dietary Problems: Anorexia or Obesity
Anorexia or obsessive eating is often caused by an underlying medical condition, so it is essential to obtain a veterinary check first. Once a medical cause has been ruled out, a behavioural cause should be assessed. These issues can be complex and may require a detailed exploration of the root cause.

Environmental Behaviour Problems in Cats
House soiling and furniture scratching are examples of environmental behaviour issues.

The environment is often at the root of most behaviour problems in cats. It must always be assessed when attempting to understand or resolve behavioural concerns.

Feline Fears and Phobias
All types of phobias can occur in cats, and these are among the most distressing behavioural issues to witness.

Examples include fear of a specific room, object, or person.
